Happy Thanksgiving to all Fisher community members! I hope you are enjoying good times and good food with your loved ones!
The Totin Thanksgiving dinner will be later this evening, so until then I am working on some school work while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. So far I have seen some marching bands, floats, and 2 huge balloons- the Pillsbury Dough-boy and Charlie Brown. I know I talked about the parade with some of our young Marlins who visited the library in the past two weeks. I have some questions for you and would love it if you could take a few moments to answer them. 1. What is something you are thankful for today? 2. Did you watch some of the Thanksgiving Day Parade? What did you see? What was your favorite part? 3. Have you read any great books during the break? Tell us the title and a little bit about one of them. Enjoy the rest of your days of our break!

Hello Marlins,
We are nearing the end of the school year and I would like some input from you. Please answer the following questions for me. 1. What was the title of one of your favorite books you read this year? 2. In a few words, please tell me why it was your favorite. Hint: Do not write something like "It was cool" or "It was good". You could write something like "It was interesting because..." 3. If you are returning to Fisher next year, what are some new books you hope to see in the library? 4. If you are going on to middle school, what are some books you hope to see in your new library? Welcome back, Fisher Marlins! I hope you all had an awesome summer and managed to read at least one or two great books!
I spent a few weeks in Wisconsin again, and took a fantastic vacation with my family to Door County, Wisconsin. I think it's one of the most beautiful places on earth! The picture above was taken there. I also read a lot of amazing books, including ALL 20 books on this year's Bluebonnet list! I can't wait to hear what you think about them. I have two requests for you: 1. Tell me about something fun you did this summer. 2. Tell me about a book you read this summer. What was the title? What was it about? I look forward to seeing you at school, and to reading your answers to this post. Check back here often for more posts! During the week of February 27th-March 3rd, 2017, we will be celebrating Read Across America Week. This week is designed to promote the simple joy of reading for fun, fun, FUN! And on Thursday, March 2nd, we will celebrate the birthday of our beloved Dr. Seuss! As part of the week's activities, we invite you to reply to our latest blog questions:
1. What is the title of your favorite Dr. Seuss book? 2. Why do you like that book? 3. What was your favorite part? You can reply as an individual. Teachers, especially those of our younger students, are invited to reply as an entire class. I also invite parents and other Fisher Marlin supporters to submit their answers as well. I look forward to reading your replies! I have written about one of my favorites below. Hello Marlins! I hope all of you have had fun this summer, have spent time with family and friends, and have managed to read some great books. My husband and I were able to take a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico this summer. Beautiful weather, gorgeous scenery, wonderful people, delicious food, and so many things to do and places to explore. It was an amazing trip! I have also been working on reading many of the books on the Texas Bluebonnet list for the 2016-2017 school year. One of my favorites is titled "Circus Mirandus" by Cassie Beasley. It is a fantasy story about a boy named Micah who lives with his grandfather because his parents died when he was very little. Micah's grandfather tells him a story about a circus that appears only to children, a circus that he visited as a boy. Micah's grandfather is very sick and Micah is very worried about him. The Lightbender, who is one of the people who run the circus, promised Micah's grandfather a miracle when he was a boy, and Micah goes to visit the circus in hopes of retrieving the miracle and saving his grandfather's life. I highly recommend this story! I was lucky enough to meet the author and get an autographed copy of the book when I attended last spring's Texas Library Conference. I have two requests for you:
Tell about something fun you did over the summer. Tell about a good book you read over the summer. I look forward to reading replies from students and their families, from teachers, and all Fisher staff members! I hope you all had a great spring break, had lots of fun, and hopefully you managed to read a good book or two!
I spent a lot of my spring break working on painting some of the rooms of our house. I also went to see some friends in Houston who I hadn't seen in a very long time. I did manage to read two book last week as well. One book was a grown up novel, about a private detective and his partner working to solve a crime. It was written by J.K. Rowling, the author the Harry Potter series. However, she wrote this book under the pen name Robert Galbraith. I am also working on the audiobook version of one of next year's Bluebonnet Award candidates. It's called "Space Case" by Stuart Gibbs, and it's about a boy named Dashiell who is living on the moon with his family. The year is at least 2040 and they are living in the first settlement on the moon. I haven't finished it yet, but right now Dashiell and some other people are trying to solve the mystery of who killed one of the scientists on the colony. I have two requests for you, and you are welcome to answer either or both: 1. Tell me about something fun you did during spring break. 2. Tell me about a book you read during spring break. Next week, February 29th-March 4th, we will be celebrating Read Across America Week. This week is designed to promote the simple joy of reading for fun, fun, FUN! And on Wednesday, March 2nd, we will celebrate the 112th birthday of our beloved Dr.
One of my favorite Dr. Seuss books is "Oh the Places You Will Go" because I like that it encourages children of all ages to believe in their dreams and work for them. I also like "Fox in Socks" because I enjoy tongue twisters and this book is full of them. It's fun to read this book with students and laugh ourselves silly trying to repeat the tongue twisters in the book! Welcome to the Fisher Marlin Library Blog! This is a new venture for me this year. I hope many of you take time to read it, to post your comments, and I even hope to have students contribute to its contents. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mrs. Totin and I am very happy and honored to be your Fisher librarian. I have been a librarian for four years. This is the beginning of my fifth year as a librarian and at Fisher. Before this, I taught in the classroom, at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and PE. For me, being a librarian is a dream come true! I get to work with students- supporting what they are learning in their classrooms, helping them connect with great books, and encouraging their lifelong love of reading and learning. I get to help parents find additional books their children can read and enjoy. I also get to work with teachers to help them find library resources they can use in their classrooms, and collaborate with them to plan research lessons and projects. I am originally from Wisconsin, a.k.a the Badger State, the Dairy State, and Packerland! Yes, I am a lifelong Green Bay Packer fan and shareholder, and bleed green and gold during the football season. Go Pack Go! I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh- yay Titans! After teaching for quite awhile, I decided to return to college. I attended the University of North Texas in Denton- home of the Eagles, where I earned my Master's Degree in Library Science. I am now fortunate enough to hold what I consider to be the best job I've ever had. In my spare time I love reading, cooking, and spending time with my family. I am married to my amazing husband John, who works in the restaurant business. We have a super-friendly and loving rescue dog named Jack, who is part Boxer and part Collie. (He's a Packer fan too!) We love traveling, both to see family and friends and to check out new places. We also enjoy trying new restaurants and seeing the sights in and around San Antonio. I look forward to working and learning with you this school year! I hope everyone had an awesome summer, full of fun and great memories! Here's to an equally super school year 2015-2016!
I got to visit Wisconsin and Illinois this summer, where I was lucky enough to spend time with my mom, my older brother and his family, and my sister and her family. I also saw lots of my other relatives and visited some friends too. The weather was beautiful and we got to spend a lot of time outside! I did manage to read quite a few books this summer. One of my favorites was a book called "Mountain Dog" by Margarita Engle. It is one of this year's Texas Bluebonnet Award candidates and is about a boy named Tony, who is sent to live with his uncle in the mountains after his mom is sent to jail for running a dog-fighting ring. Tony's new environment is nothing like his old one and it takes time for him to adjust. His uncle is part of an organization that helps train search and rescue dogs and to conduct searches and rescues for missing people. Tony's world opens up when he becomes involved too, and he develops positive relationships with his uncle and his uncle's dog, Gabe. The story has strong themes of family, compassion, and triumph over adversity. I have two questions for you: What is something fun you did over the summer? What is the title of a good book you read over the summer? I look forward to reading your replies! |
